The National Car Test (NCT) is Ireland’s compulsory vehicle inspection that checks if your car meets road safety and environmental standards.

Most cars must undergo an NCT every 2 years once they are over 4 years old. Vehicles over 10 years old must be tested annually.

The standard NCT test fee is €60. A re-test (if required) is free if no equipment is needed; otherwise, it costs €28.

On average, the test takes about 40 minutes. However, it’s recommended to allow extra time in case of delays.

You’ll need:

  • Your vehicle registration certificate (logbook).

  • A valid photo ID (driving licence or passport).

  • Your booking confirmation (print or digital).

You’ll receive a detailed report outlining what needs to be fixed. You must repair the issues and book a re-test before driving legally.

No, it’s illegal to drive a car without a valid NCT certificate unless you are driving to a pre-booked test appointment.
